How to avoid going off-topic

Hi

How can you avoid going off-topic in IELTS Writing task 2?

As you probably know, in IELTS Writing task 2 you have to write at least 250 words on a particular topic; you may also know how easy it is to go off-topic once you start writing and generating more ideas.

Here are two suggestions to help you keep your essay focused on exactly what you’ve been asked to write about:

  1. Make a plan before you start writing; the plan doesn’t have to be very detailed but planning what you’re going to write can help you stay focused on the topic in the task.
  2. Look back at the essay task (or your plan) every time you finish a paragraph; if you wait until you’ve finished your essay before checking whether you’re still on-topic, it may be too late.

If you want some practice of making plans, have a look at the IELTS Writing task 2 samples on the official IELTS website.
