Here’s a link to a great online tool that I’ve been using for a while: an Academic Word List highlighter. The tool allows you to highlight words in a text that are on the Academic Word List (AWL).
And best of all, it’s free and easy to use!

Here’s a summary of my instructions on the video:
- Choose a text that you’ve already read.
- Copy and paste the text (or part of the text) into the Academic Word List highlighter at the link above.
- Press the ‘Submit’ button and then scroll down to see the academic vocabulary highlighted.
- Check you understand the meaning of the academic vocabulary in the text, and notice how the words are used.
