The opinion of Professor Savulescu

Hi

In the IELTS reading test, you may get a question that asks you to match a list of opinions to a list of people mentioned in the text.

To give you some practice of answering this type of question, I’ve created an example for the text I recommended you read in my post ‘A challenging IELTS topic‘.

If you haven’t read the text yet, have a look at it now – Scientists create artificial life in laboratory – and then try answering the questions below.

Look at the following list of opinions and the list of scientists below.

Match each opinion with the correct scientist, A, B or C.

1. Attempts to create artificial life using genetic technology should be banned.

2. There are possible benefits and potential dangers of this new genetic technology.

3. The synthetic bacterium created by Venter is not a great scientific breakthrough.

List of scientists

A. Julian Savulescu

B. Ben Davis

C. David King

D. Paul Freemont

The strategy I use for this type of question is to scan the text for the names in the list, underline them in the text when I find them, and then read what each person thinks.

I then look at the list of opinions and match each one to the appropriate person.

As with all IELTS reading questions, it’s important to read the instructions carefully. With this type of question, the instructions may say…

  • you can use the options A, B, C and D  more than once

I’ll post the answers in a couple of days.
