Hi
Here are the answers to the reading questions in my post ‘The opinion of Professor Savulescu‘.
As with any IELTS reading test practice, if you find you’ve got one or more answers wrong, it’s important to understand why your answer(s) are wrong.
Look at the following list of opinions and the list of scientists below.
Match each opinion with the correct scientist, A, B or C.
1. Attempts to create artificial life using genetic technology should be banned. (C) “David King… called for a moratorium on similar research”
2. There are possible benefits and potential dangers of this new genetic technology. (A) “The potential is in the far future, but real and significant. But the risks are also unparalleled”
3. The synthetic bacterium created by Venter is not a great scientific breakthrough. (B) “Others, however, are unconvinced. Ben Davis… said [it] is not so different from molecular biology at the moment”
List of scientists
A. Julian Savulescu
B. Ben Davis
C. David King
D. Paul Freemont
One reason you may have found these questions difficult is that each answer contains some academic vocabulary: ‘similar’, ‘research’, ‘potential’, ‘significant’, ‘unparalleled’ and ‘unconvinced’ are all on the Academic Word List.
Have a good week,
Pete
