Subject-specific vocabulary (2)

Hi

I’ve said before that as part of your IELTS preparation it’s important to improve your vocabulary related to common IELTS topics, and so today I’d like to highlight some vocabulary specifically related to the topic of air travel.

All of the words and examples below appear in the article that I suggested you read in my post ‘Some more recommended reading for you‘.

Some other words for ‘aeroplane’:

  • plane
  • aircraft
  • commercial jet

The different forms of the word ‘fly’:

  • I have just flown more than 26 hours without using a drop of fuel…
  • The lessons learned from the test flight will be used to…
  • …attempt to fly around the world.

People or objects on a plane:

  • a pilot / copilot
  • passengers
  • cargo

The possible advantages of solar planes:

  • I have just flown more than 26 hours without using a drop of fuel and without causing any pollution!
  • reduce the dependency of our society on fossil fuels.

If you’re wondering how this particular vocabulary may help you in your IELTS test, take a look at the IELTS Writing task 2 question in my post ‘What to do if you’re unfamiliar with the topic you have to write about‘ and think about which words/phrases you could use if you had to answer this question.

If you’ve read the article ‘Solar plane lasts all night long‘, you may have noticed some other vocabulary related to this topic.
