Five days of reading

Hi

In our video ‘How I got an IELTS Reading band score 8.0‘, an IELTS candidate from Chile (Cris) advised you to read as much as you can as part of your IELTS preparation. To help you follow Cris’s advice,  here’s five days of reading for you on a variety of common IELTS topics.

MONDAY: Today’s article reports on research into the health risks of using wireless phones (i.e. cordless landlines and mobile phones) and is related to the common IELTS topics of technology and health.

Study points to cancer risk in wireless telephones

In the article, you can find out why the World Health Organisation has classified wireless phones as ‘possibly carcinogenic’ (i.e. something that possibly causes cancer).

TUESDAY: The article today was reported in the news last week and is related to the common IELTS topics of health and science. It’s about a man suffering from cancer who had an artificial trachea (i.e. windpipe) successfully implanted.

To make the text a little easier to understand, it would be a good idea to check you understand the following vocabulary first:

  • a synthetic windpipe, an organ, stem cells, a human donor, tissue, a transplant, lungs

WEDNESDAY: After a couple of days reading about serious issues, here’s an article on a lighter subject related to the common IELTS topics of crime and the natural world.

It involves a group of monkeys, a camera, and some interesting photos.

THURSDAY: Today’s article, like yesterday’s, is on the topic of the natural world. It’s about why there has been an increase in swarms of jellyfish (i.e. very large groups of jellyfish) and how this increase could be contributing towards global warming.

FRIDAY: While yesterday’s article was about the threat to the oceans from an increase in jellyfish, today’s article is about the threat to the lagoon in Venice from an increase in tourists.

Like Thursday’s article, this text is related to the common IELTS topic of environmental problems.

I hope you enjoy the articles.

PS The photo of the mobile phone above was taken by Jean-Etienne Minh-Duy Poirrier, and the photo of the jellyfish was taken by Jim G.
