Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? (2)

Hi

I’ve just been looking around the official IELTS website and found the following IELTS Writing task 2 question.

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy.

The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

This question is similar to the one in my previous post ‘Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?‘, i.e. it’s asking you whether or not there are more advantages to a situation than there are disadvantages.

This time, however, instead of telling you how I would answer the question, it would be a good idea for you to think about how you would answer it.

You may get a similar type of question in your IELTS test.

  1. It would be right to write one paragraph about benefit, one about drawbacks and a conclusion where we state our opinion(whether or not we agree with the statement)

    • Hi Alessio, if you wrote a paragraph introducing the topic and then wrote the paragraphs you have described above, then that would be an acceptable way to organise an answer to this IELTS Task 2 essay question.

  2. Yes, I was thinking I could write an introduction where I say that my opinion is in the middle (partially agree) because nuclear power has benefit, but also disadvantages.
Then I write a paragraph with advantages and another paragraph with drawbacks and a conclusion ;)

    Thanks Pete
