Three writing tasks on a common IELTS Writing topic
Looking at examples of published IELTS tests and from what our students tell us about their tests, a common IELTS Writing topic is transport.
Here’s an example of an IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 on this common IELTS writing topic (taken from the Official IELTS Practice Materials).
There have been some problems with public transport in your area recently.
Write a letter to the manager of the public transport company. In your letter
- describe the problems
- explain how these problems are affecting the public
- suggest what changes could be made
Here’s an example of an IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 on the topic of transport (which used to be on the official IELTS website).
The graph below shows the different modes of transport used to travel to and from work in one European city in 1960, 1980 and 2000.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Here’s an example of an IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 on this common IELTS Writing topic (taken from the Official IELTS Practice Materials).
Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Whether you’re taking IELTS General Training or IELTS Academic, these examples show that it would be a good idea to think about issues relating to transport and to improve your vocabulary related to this common IELTS Writing topic before your test.
Have a good weekend,
Pete
