Why is the Academic Word List important? (2)

Another reason why you should improve your academic vocabulary for IELTS

If you’ve read my post ‘Why is the Academic Word List important‘, you’ll know that it’s a good idea to learn more vocabulary from the Academic Word List in preparation for the IELTS Reading test. You may not know, however, that it’s also important to improve your academic vocabulary for the IELTS Listening test, particularly for Section 4 of the IELTS Listening test.

To see why it’s important, have a look at the following figures:

In the IELTS Listening tests that I’ve looked at, between 6% and 8% of the vocabulary used in Section 4 are words on the Academic Word List, which equates to an average of one academic word every 5 or 6 seconds of the recording.

In one particular IELTS Listening test, four of the ten answers in Section 4 were words on the Academic Word List.

For those of you who haven’t done an IELTS Listening test before, Section 4 is a four to five minute talk on an academic topic.

For a link to the Academic Word List and a suggestion about how you can learn more of these words, check out our post ‘The Academic Word List‘.
