Academic Word List highlighter

Hi

Here’s a link to a great online tool that I’ve been using for a while: an Academic Word List highlighter. The tool allows you to highlight words in a text that are on the Academic Word List (AWL).

And best of all, it’s free and easy to use!

Check out the video below to see how to use it:

(If you can’t view the video above, try viewing it directly on our YouTube channel).

Here’s a summary of my instructions on the video:

  1. Choose a text that you’ve already read.
  2. Copy and paste the text (or part of the text) into the Academic Word List highlighter at the link above.
  3. Press the ‘Submit’ button and then scroll down to see the academic vocabulary highlighted.
  4. Check you understand the meaning of the academic vocabulary in the text, and notice how the words are used.

If you’re wondering why it’s a good idea to improve your academic vocabulary as part of your IELTS preparation, check out the blog post ‘Why is the Academic Word List important?‘.

Have a good weekend,

Pete

Update: the Academic Word List Highlighter in the video above is no longer available but there is another one available on the University of Nottingham website.
