What to do if you’re unfamiliar with the topic you have to write about

An IELTS candidate recently asked us what she should do in IELTS Writing task 2 if she has to write about a topic that she isn’t familiar with.

In her previous test, the candidate said she’d got the following topic and that she didn’t know much about it.

“Some people believe that recent increases in cheap air travel have many benefits. However, others believe that this has some drawbacks for the environment. Discuss both views and give your opinion.”

What do you know about nuclear technology?

Hi

Reading about the world nuclear summit in the USA, I was reminded of the IELTS Writing task 2 question that I posted a few weeks ago on the benefits and disadvantages of nuclear technology.

Looking at the question again, I can see how difficult it would be to answer if you’re not familiar with this topic.

In our recent IELTS seminar, I provided some words and phrases like ‘cause‘ and ‘result in‘ that can be used to show a cause/effect relationship between ideas.

Such words and phrases are often useful when writing an IELTS writing task 2 essay.

In our recent IELTS seminar on how to write a better essay for your IELTS test, I got asked about how to answer a particular type of IELTS writing task 2 question.

The type of question the candidate was uncertain about is the one that asks ‘To what extent do you agree or disagree?‘.

I get asked this question a lot, and so I’d like to answer it here by looking at an example from the official IELTS website.
