What do you know about nuclear technology?

April 13th, 2010

Hi

Reading about the world nuclear summit in the USA, I was reminded of the IELTS Writing task 2 question that I posted a few weeks ago on the benefits and disadvantages of nuclear technology.

Looking at the question again, I can see how difficult it would be to answer if you’re not familiar with this topic.

As it’s possible that you could get a similar question in your IELTS test, here’s a summary of the benefits and disadvantages.

The benefits:

  • Nuclear power stations emit less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than other types of power station
  • The cost of nuclear power is not affected by changes in the price of oil or gas
  • The threat of nuclear weapons can prevent countries from attacking one another

The disadvantages:

  • Nuclear power stations produce high- and low-level radioactive waste
  • The cost of building nuclear power stations is high
  • Accidents at nuclear power stations can have disastrous consequences
  • The consequences of using nuclear weapons are extremely serious

If you want to read about the benefits and drawbacks of nuclear power in more detail, check out the following article.

You could also follow what happens at the world nuclear summit by checking your favourite online news site; you’ll be thankful that you did if you get a text or essay question about nuclear technology in your IELTS test.
