Hi
How can you avoid going off-topic in IELTS Writing task 2?
As you probably know, in IELTS Writing task 2 you have to write at least 250 words on a particular topic; you may also know how easy it is to go off-topic once you start writing and generating more ideas.
Here are two suggestions to help you keep your essay focused on exactly what you’ve been asked to write about:
- Make a plan before you start writing; the plan doesn’t have to be very detailed but planning what you’re going to write can help you stay focused on the topic in the task.
- Look back at the essay task (or your plan) every time you finish a paragraph; if you wait until you’ve finished your essay before checking whether you’re still on-topic, it may be too late.
If you want some practice of making a plan, have a look at the other examples of IELTS Writing task 2 questions on this blog.
