Hi
In our recent IELTS seminar, I provided some words and phrases like ‘cause‘ and ‘result in‘ that can be used to show a cause/effect relationship between ideas.
Such words and phrases are often useful when writing an IELTS writing task 2 essay.
Here’s a list with some examples of how they could be used in an answer to the essay question in my post ‘To what extent…‘.
Verbs:
- causes (e.g. the development of technology will cause the loss of traditional cultures.)
- results in
- leads to
Nouns:
- The result/consequence of… is… (e.g. There have been many technological developments over the past ten or so years, with the mobile phone and the internet being obvious examples. The result of these developments, however, is that many of us no longer live according to our cultural traditions.)
- The effect/outcome of… is…
Linking words/phrases:
- As a result (e.g. Our lives have been changed by technological developments over the past ten or so years, and as a result many of us no longer live according to our cultural traditions.)
- Consequently
To improve your writing, as well as remembering the list of words/phrases, it’s important that you notice the different ways they are used.
Pete
