Here’s a question that I get asked a lot: ‘What vocabulary should I learn as part of my IELTS preparation?’.
Last month, I talked about learning words on the Academic Word List; today, I’d like to recommend that you also learn more vocabulary specifically-related to common IELTS topics.
To get you started, I’ve found some words related to the common IELTS topic of the natural world that appear many times in one of the articles I suggested you read in my post ‘Some recommended reading for you‘.
One of these words is ‘species‘.
As you may know, this word is used to describe different types of animal or plant, and can be used in the singular form, e.g. a species of bear, or plural form, e.g. many species of bear.
In the text, which is about a suggestion to create wild populations of bears and wolves in the British countryside, it is used with the following adjectives:
- rare species
- large species
- native species
- alien species
- endangered species
If you need to, use a dictionary to check the difference in the meaning between these five types of species.
Other words related to the topic of the natural world that appear several times are ‘carnivore‘ and ‘population‘.
