Hi
I’ve recently started using the free online edition of the Macmillan dictionary to check the meaning and usage of words that I get asked about.
And, in short, it’s fantastic!
What I most like about it, and what I think you’ll find useful, are the audio recordings of the pronunciation of the words you look up (in British and American English), and the link to words/phrases with similar meanings (i.e. synonyms).
One of our learners asked me today whether there was another word for ‘passive smoking‘ (meaning to breathe in other people’s tobacco smoke). I looked up ‘passive smoking‘ in the dictionary, clicked on ‘Synonyms or related words‘ and found ‘second-hand smoke‘ and ‘second-hand smoking‘.
I then sent her the link, and suggested she compare the English and American pronunciation of these words. (You can change from one version to another by clicking on ‘View American/British English definition‘).
Check it out.
Pete
