Two more great online dictionaries

May 20th, 2010

Hi

In a recent post, I talked about how useful the Macmillan dictionary could be for your IELTS preparation. Today, I’d like to tell you about another two online dictionaries that have recently added some great new features.

The first is the Cambridge Advanced Learner’s dictionary, which now includes…

  • audio recordings of individual words in British and American English
  • a thesaurus showing words/phrases related to the word you looked up

I just looked up the word ‘test‘ to see what words are related to it, and I got a shock; the thesaurus shows that the words ‘retake‘ and ‘resit‘ (meaning to take a test again) are more frequently used than the word ‘pass‘ (meaning to reach the required standard in a test).

The second dictionary is the Oxford Advanced Learner’s dictionary. It now contains the Academic Word List and a list of new English words.

It also has audio recordings in British and American English.

I’ll let you know if any more features are added.

Pete
