A challenging IELTS topic

May 28th, 2010

Hi

How easily do you think you could answer the following questions if you were asked them in your IELTS speaking test?

  • Where can people in your country get information about genetic research?
  • How do people in your country feel about genetic research?
  • Should this research be funded by governments or private companies?

If you’d find these questions difficult to answer because you’re not familiar with the topic of genetic research, then check out the article at the link below to get some ideas on this challenging topic.

Scientists create artificial life in laboratory

The article is about a recent scientific breakthrough: the creation of a synthetic (i.e. artificial) form of bacterium nicknamed ‘Synthia’. It talks about how the scientists created Synthia, and mentions the possible benefits and dangers of this new genetic technology.

After you’ve read the article, think about how this story was reported in your country, how people reacted to this news, and how you think this kind of research should be funded.

Just in case you’re wondering where I got the speaking questions from, I saw them in a published version of a past IELTS speaking test.

Have a good weekend,
