Hi
With all the talk this last week of ash clouds and cancelled flights, I thought I’d have a look around for some related resources that would be useful for your IELTS preparation.
This is best of what I found:
- ‘Volcanoes‘ is a short talk on what volcanoes are, what causes them, and where they can be found (on Earth and on other planets).
- ‘Volcanic ash affects airplanes, weather, sunsets‘ is an article about the effects of volcanic ash clouds.
If you want to listen to the recording or read the article, it would be a good idea to check you understand the following vocabulary first:
- eruptions, magma, tectonic plates (oceanic and continental), the Earths crust, lava, ash plumes
I know you may be thinking that this is a bit of a science lesson, but in section four of the IELTS listening test, the most difficult section, you have to listen to a talk on an academic subject which can often be quite scientific.
And, the texts in the IELTS Academic reading test are often on scientific topics (although they won’t refer to current events like the article above does).
Have a good weekend,
Pete
