Put some energy into your IELTS preparation (or should that be power?)

I’ve noticed that some IELTS candidates I work with can get the words ‘energy‘ and ‘power‘ mixed up. As you probably know, in some cases either of these two words can be used (e.g. ‘nuclear power/energy’) but do you know when to use one and not the other?

To give you some examples of how ‘energy’ and ‘power’ are used differently, I had another look at how these words were used in the articles I recommended in my post ‘Think green for your IELTS test‘.

Subject-specific vocabulary

Here’s a question that I get asked a lot: ‘What vocabulary should I learn as part of my IELTS preparation?’.

Last month, I talked about learning words on the Academic Word List; today, I’d like to recommend that you also learn more vocabulary specifically-related to common IELTS topics.

To get you started, I’ve found some words related to the common IELTS topic of the natural world that appear many times in one of the articles I suggested you read in my post ‘Some recommended reading for you‘.

One of these words is ‘species‘.

The Academic Word List

Some vocabulary that you should learn more about as part of your IELTS preparation are the words on the Academic Word List (a list of words that are commonly used in academic texts but not so common in everyday conversation).

One way to learn more about these words is to look at how they are used in texts.
