More about IELTS
What level can I get in IELTS?
IELTS provides candidates with an Overall Band Score from 1 to 9, where 1 is a Non-user and 9 is an Expert user.
The majority of candidates get between 5 and 7. (Source: official IELTS website).
- 5 - Modest Users can communicate and understand the general meaning in most situations but are likely to make a lot of mistakes.
- 6 - Competent Users can generally communicate effectively but will still make some mistakes and have some misunderstandings. They can use and understand some complex language.
- 7 - Good Users can communicate effectively, using and understanding complex language. They will still make occasional mistakes, however, and have misunderstandings in some situations.
Overall Band Scores can be given in whole or half bands.

How are IELTS scores calculated?
Candidates receive an Overall Band Score, as well as separate band scores for reading, listening, writing and speaking.
The Overall Band Score is calculated by averaging the separate band scores and then rounding to the nearest whole or half band.
A candidate with band scores of 5.5 for listening, 5.5 for reading, 5.0 for writing and 5.5 for speaking would receive an Overall Band Score of 5.5 (21.5 ÷ 4 = 5.375 = Band 5.5).
What IELTS score do I need to get?
IELTS score requirements vary between different universities, employers and government agencies.
Universities
Universities generally require an Overall Band Score of around 6.0 for undergraduate courses and around 6.5 for postgraduate courses. The score required varies, however, and so you should check the score you need with your chosen university.
Immigration
If you want to work in, or immigrate to, an English-speaking country, you should check the IELTS score requirements with your chosen employer or country.
